Troubleshooting
If you are experiencing issues setting up or connecting to any of your Outrider devices, this comprehensive guide should provide the information necessary to get you moving again.
I have installed my Outrider sensors, but can't find find them in the app
It is important to be aware of the full setup process to get the sensors to start advertising. Outrider products are by default in deep sleep mode to save power during the journey from our factory to your doorstep. Outrider pressure sensors must be pressurized to 10 PSI (0.7 BAR) or greater to activate and begin advertising. This only needs to be done once, after which they will continue to operate normally, even when depressurized.
Outrider pressure sensors will also go into light sleep mode if left inactive for more than 5 minutes. This is done to further conserve battery life while the bike is not in use. To wake them up, simply bounce the wheels on the ground a couple times. The sensors will detect the vibration, boot up the system, and begin advertising.
If the above options still don't allow you to find the sensors, there may be an issue with your mobile app setup. Bluetooth permissions are required to properly use the Outrider mobile app. If this permission is denied or later revoked, the app will be unable to scan for Outrider devices. You can check the permissions you have enabled in your phone's settings menu.
If you are still unable to find the sensor at this point and you are eligible for a warranty claim, please fill out a warranty request here.
I have set up my Outrider sensors in the mobile app, but can't get them to connect to my Garmin
It is important to note that Outrider sensors can only be connected to one device at a time. For instance, if you currently have the sensors paired to your phone via the Outrider mobile app, they will maintain the connection, preventing the Garmin device from finding them. The Outrider mobile app will search for and connect to Outrider devices while running in the background, so make sure the app is swipe-killed before attempting to connect via Garmin. Our Outrider Tire Pressure Datafield for Garmin will also begin searching for devices before starting an activity, so make sure the device is powered off before attempting to connect via the Outrider mobile app.
Garmin devices are limited to handling 3 Bluetooth connections at a time, and the Outrider sensors will fill up two of those. If you are having issues getting both sensors to connect, it may be worth considering what other Bluetooth sensors you have connected. (phone connection not included)
To avoid the need for frequently reconnecting on different devices, you can setup the sensors to use bridge mode, which allows the phone to act as a single connection point and relay tire pressure data to your Garmin device. To learn more about bridge mode, please see our online user manual here.
My Outrider sensors were working previously, but don't show up anymore
If one of your Outrider sensors appears to be unresponsive, there may be an issue with the physical sensor. To confirm this, you'll want to first isolate the issue to the sensor itself.
If you have another device you can use to connect to Outrider sensors (Garmin or phone), try to connect to both sensors with that device. Ensure the device you were using previously has the Outrider app swipe-killed (if mobile) or powered off. An alternative method is to use a third-party scanning app, such as nRF Connect, to search for the sensors. Outrider sensors use the names "OutriderF" and "OutriderR" for the front and rear respectively. Make sure you are occasionally bouncing the wheel on the ground to keep the sensors awake while doing so.
If you are still unable to find the sensor at this point and are eligible for a warranty claim, please fill out a warranty request here.
I don't get alerts on my Garmin device
Datafield alerts must be manually enabled to work properly on any Garmin device. To enable alerts on your device, navigate in the menu to Settings>Activity Profiles>[Select your activity profile]>Alerts>Add New>Connect IQ>OutriderBLEDatafield and make sure the switch is set to ON.
If you do not see the "Connect IQ" option under "Add New," there has been an issue with the installation of the datafield. To resolve this, uninstall the datafield from the device and reinstall it via the Connect IQ mobile app. There may also be an issue with the activity profile you are using. To test this, you can try adding the datafield and alert for a duplicate activity profile. If this fixes the issue, you can remove the old activity profile, and your layout and fields will be carried over to the new field.
If using bridge mode, you must have the "Flat detection alerts" setting enabled in the Outrider app. You can have notifications for the app turned off, but this setting controls whether alerts are forwarded to your Garmin device.
If you have enabled alerts and still do not see them, the issue may lie in how the alert is being triggered. Outrider sensors are designed to detect inflation events, and will not send alerts if pressure is released within 30 seconds of inflating the tire. Ensure you are leaving enough time to stabilize before testing the alert feature. In addition, ensure your alert thresholds have been properly setup in the mobile app. When setting alerts, you must have both sensors connected to the mobile app to sync the data to each sensor. You may update the threshold values at any time, but the sensors must connect to the Outrider mobile app to sync.
If pressure is released rapidly, the alert may read a pressure value above your alert threshold. This happens because alerts are sent separately and quicker than of pressure data, and the Garmin is only able to report the most recent pressure value it has received.
What is the difference between direct BLE and bridge mode?
We offer two methods of connecting your Outrider tire pressure sensors to your Garmin devices for a flexible user experience. It is important to note that certain Garmin devices are only compatible with one of these methods, please see our user manual here for a comprehensive list of device compatibility.
Direct BLE is the default method of connection, and allows the Garmin alone to handle interactions with your Outrider sensors. This is a good option if you are looking for a simple setup and the most responsive pressure readings. Using this method, the Garmin device will automatically begin scanning for Outrider sensors, and automatically connect to the closest pair. The "-.--" readout on the datafield indicates the device is actively searching for sensors to pair to. Once a sensor is discovered, the "..." readout indicates the device is attempting to connect to a sensor. Once the connection has completed, pressure data will appear on the screen. Alerts are sent directly from the Outrider sensors to the Garmin, using threshold values set up in the Outrider mobile app. It is important to note that your Garmin device is limited to handling 3 Bluetooth connections at a time, and the Outrider sensors will fill up two of those.
Bridge mode must be enabled manually, and uses the Outrider mobile app as an intermediary between the Outrider sensors and Garmin. This is a good option if you are looking for more customization or want to avoid having to reconnect the Outrider sensors to a new device. Once setup properly, this method will essentially mirror the display for the Outrider mobile app on the Outrider datafield. You can change what data is sent to the Garmin by simply swiping to a different profile in the mobile app. When riding, simply keep the Outrider mobile app running in the background, and it will continue to manage connections and relay data to the Garmin. You can enable and disable alerts using the "Flat detection alerts" setting in the mobile app. For more information on how to set up bridge mode, please see our online user manual here.
Sometimes, datafield settings can have issues syncing to your Garmin device. To know which method is actively selected on the device, a "-.--" readout in the datafield indicates it is using Direct BLE, while "--.-" indicates it is using bridge mode.
Pressure shows ~14.7psi (1 bar) higher on mobile app vs. on Garmin
Outrider uses the barometric pressure sensor, if available, to convert the absolute pressure received from the device into gauge pressure. To access this sensor, the mobile App needs access to the Health and Fitness permission on iOS devices, please ensure this is enabled in system Settings under the Outrider app. On android, coarse location permission is needed to access the barometer and can be toggled from system settings -> Outrider. If your phone does not have a barometer, Outrider will use location data to estimate atmospheric pressure. Location permissions must be enabled for this to function.
I have followed the above steps, but there seems to be a bug with the app/datafield
If you notice strange behavior with your Outrider devices on a single platform, or believe there to be a bug in one of our apps, please reach out to us at info@outridercomponents.com to get in contact with a developer to resolve the issue.
Trouble installing tire around my Outrider
For rims near the minimum width recommendations (21 mm for symmetric road or gravel, 25 mm for symmetric MTB, and 25 mm road or gravel or 28 mm MTB for asymmetric rims), the following steps can help with installation:
-
Begin the tire install directly over the Outrider and work the bead around the rim, finishing on the side opposite the sensor.
-
Do not install the valve nut initially. Push the valve up into the tire so the bead can move past the sensor more easily.
-
Once both beads are fully seated around the rim, install and tighten the valve nut.
-
If using this method, test spacer height before installing the tire to ensure proper clearance.
Unable to install Outrider on Valves/remove seal
Outrider sensors require tubeless valves with a removable valve seal as shown in the diagram below. If the seal cannot be removed from your current valve, it will not be compatible. If unsure, check out our Outrider Tubeless valves here.
